9 out 10 doctors will not recommend their profession to others. This is a staggering statistic. What is even more troublesome is the high suicide rate amongst physicians.
Wherein lies the problem? It is two fold:
- On the one hand, it can be very discouraging whenever you feel very passionate about your purpose in life – only to find you are being thwarted at every step.
- Why would anyone continue doing what they do when society punishes them for doing something altruistic and good for all of humanity – like save people’s lives?
Interestingly enough, there is also a counter productive stigma within the wellness world. People expect you to treat them for free and in addition you are supposed to be unattractive.
None of this makes any sense. As we continue along this path – there will be a brain drain out of the health and wellness professions not unlike the mass exodus found in England because the conditions and working opportunities for the ambitious were stifling.
Now the government jumps in. It sees an opportunity to capitalize and become even more controlling of they society it is designed to govern. And we all know what ultimately happens to situations like these.
As doctors quit their jobs, and less talented join the job force - lesser skilled care takers remain to take care of you. As a culture of excesses and lack of personal restraint and awareness mixed with a social climate that is somewhat gloomy, health plummets, weights gain and more money is spent on health care. Again the government jumps in because as a nanny state – they will now determine what you can eat or drink.
Wherein lies the solution? – It’s in us! I have always said we need to undergo a personal revolution. One that defies our past teaching so that we may learn new ones that help us be more conscious, more creative. Learnings which addresses our world challenges and teaches us to be much more empathic to fellow humans and nature. For it is our healthy connection with others and nature that will assure a good living for all and our children of the future.
Part of that revolution lies within the realm of our personal wellness. Learn to be well. Take responsibility to do the right things for the self. Learn to be better for yourself, your family, your kids and society at large.
This is the reason for my local wellness: to help individual communities to rise to the challenge of our own well being by becoming more connected, more helpful and supportive and create new solutions for all of us. it includes being part of the conversation and helping identify and promote what really works and what does not. In this age of information overload and self serving interests – it is sometimes hard to filter out the good from the bad. This is where we can all help each other – tap into the positive and promote it.
Final words:
The future of medicine is already changing dramatically. I am proof of that myself and practice differently than before – not restricted to the external forces that dictate how and when I practice. Creating my local wellness is an example how I know how I can help people in the best way – let others do the same too or we shall lose the best to other professions and our wellbeing.
